Billbergia ‘Sangre’
Don Beadle’s hybrid of (horrida v. tigrina x ‘Baton Rouge’) x stenopetala is a masterpiece. As Don said in his registry description, it is slow growing, taking up to three years to reach its best color and form. It’s an upright, flaring tube of 2 inch wide leaves, crimson red, and glossy, spotted with white and banded with whitish-silver bars that are more concentrated on the lower 2/3 of the leaves. The leaves bear a thumbprint, reminiscent of Ae. nudicaulis and has an upright inflorescence typical of its horrida parent, but completely unlike the stenopetala half. Very long lasting and durable after blooming.
